Downloading and Playing NetLibrary eAudiobooks
Downloading and playing eAudiobooks from NetLibrary can be a little complicated. Here is a step-by-step guide to downloading content, from the Library's home page all the way to putting it on an MP3 player device.
1. Click on the "24-Hour Library Resources" tab from the front of the webpage (http://www.wpld.alibrary.com). |
2. On the 24-Hour resources page find "NetLibrary" and click on it. |
3.When you get to the NetLibrary card authentication page, enter your Winnetka-Northfield Public Library District card number. |
4. When you get to the NetLibrary page you should see the Winnetka-Northfield Public Library logo. If you do not have a NetLibrary account (different from your library card number) you will have to set one up by clicking on the "Create a Free Account" link. If you have an account, click on the "Log In" account. |
5. Log into your NetLibrary account by typing your login and password into the "Username" and "Password" blanks. |
6. After you are logged in you can start searching for title. To see exactly what kinds of things are available for download from NetLibrary, click on the "What's Available" button. |
7. At the time this tutorial was made there were 2,605 eBooks and 1,479 eAudiobooks available for download from NetLibrary. From this screen you can click on links to see a list of eBooks or Audiobooks, or you can search for eBooks or Audiobooks. In this case, we will do a search by clicking on "Search for Audiobooks." |
8. For this example we will search for audiobooks by Mark Twain. Because we came to this screen from the Audiobooks section of the "What's Available" page, the Audiobooks box at the bottom is already checked. Entering "mark twain" in the author box and clicking on "Search" will search for all audiobooks with Mark Twain as author. |
9. This search found a total of eight items. The first item listed is Roughing It. To download this audiobook, click on the "Download this Audiobook" link. |
10. This screen gives you the option to download three different items: the audiobook in CD quality, the audiobook in radio quality, or just the license. You would download the license if you'd previously downloaded the audiobook but the old license (good for the checkout period of 21 days) had expired. This is essentially how you can renew an audiobook. The radio quality download is a faster and smaller download and would be appropriate for people at home who have a dial-up connection or want to listen to the audiobook on their computer. If you want to transfer the audiobook to an MP3 player, you need to select CD quality. In this tutorial we are downloading the CD quality so it can be transferred to an MP3 player if we want. This screen tells us that the file is 230 megabytes in size, which means it is going to take a while to download. |
11. After clicking on the download link, we get a message telling us that the audiobook was successfully checked out. Then your browser (in this example the browser was Firefox) will prompt you asking if you want to open or save the audiobook to disk when its download has completed. In this case we will click on "Save to Disk" which will save the file onto the desktop. |
12. A progress bar should then pop up and let you know how the downloading is proceeding. Once the download is finished, you can close or minimize your web browser. |
13. Find your downloaded audiobook (in our example it was saved to the desktop, but it's possible to specify that it be saved elsewhere). Double-click on it to open it in Windows Media Player. |
14. In most cases, when you open the audiobook in Windows Media Player, a License Acquisition dialog will pop up. When you get this, just enter your NetLibrary username and password again to license the file to be played on your computer. An audiobook can be licensed to only one computer for the duration of the checkout period. In some cases, if you used Internet Explorer to download the audiobook you will not have to type in your username and password to license the file because the computer will still remember that information |
15. After you will have acquired the license you will get a screen that tells you how much time remains on your checkout. The time of a checkout is 21 days from when you started downloading the file. In this case, by the time the file was licensed for the computer, the amount of time remaining on the checkout had been reduced to 20 days, 23 hours and 32 minutes. Click on the "Play" button to start playing the file on your computer. |
16. Now in Windows Media Player you can see the audiobook in the
"Now Playing List." You can see that the total time of the recording
is 16 hours, 25 minutes and 51 seconds. At the bottom of the screen
are the play/pause and stop buttons and a slider indicating how far
into the file you are. All of the instructions here assume you are using Windows Media Player 10. Windows Media Player 9 also works, but looks considerably different. |
17. If you want to transfer the audiobook onto a MP3 player (which must be Microsoft PlaysForSure certified), right click on the name of the audiobook, choose "Add to" and then choose "Sync List." This will add the audiobook to the list of audio files to be transferred to your player. |
18. You should now plug your MP3 player into your computer. Different MP3 players work in different ways, so check the documentation that came with your MP3 player for more detailed information. The popular iPod MP3 players made by Apple will not work with netLibrary audiobooks. |
19. After plugging the MP3 player into your computer, click on the Sync button in Windows Media Player. |
20. The screen will now be divided into two panels. On the left is the list of items that Windows Media Player intends to synchronize with your player. On the right is everything currently listed as being on your player (in this instance One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is already on the player). To transfer the new title onto the player, click on the "Start Sync" button. |
21. You will now see a progress bar indicating how much of the file has been transferred to the player. It will probably take a few minutes to transfer the file from the computer onto the player. |
22. Once the file transfer is complete, the progress bar will disappear and you will see the transferred audiobook listed on the MP3 Player. On this screen Roughing It has been added to the panel underneath One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. In the left panel it says that the file was successfully "synchronized to device." You can now close Windows Media Player and disconnect the MP3 player from the computer. |
23. You should now be able to listen to the audiobook on your MP3 player. The file will also remain playable on your computer until the checkout period runs out. After the end of the 21 days checkout period the file will become unplayable but remain on both your computer and the MP3 player. You may wish to delete it then to free up space. |
